Vietnam, officially the Society Republic of Vietnam is the eastern most country on the Indochina Peninsula of Southeast Asia. Bilateral links between Australia and Vietnam have developed significantly since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1973. Vietnam is bordered by China to the north, Laos to the northwest, Cambodia to the southwest, Thailand across the Gulf of Thailand to the southwest, and the Philippines, Malaysia and Indonesia across the South China Sea to the east and southeast. Its capital city has been Hanoi since the reunification of North and South Vietnam in 1976, with Ho Chi Minh City as the most populous city. The Australian Government is a partner of the Australia-Vietnam Young Leadership Dialogue, which seeks to “facilitate deeper understanding and collaboration between Australian and Vietnamese young leaders.”
