Tuvalu, formerly known as the Ellice Islands, is located midway between Hawaii and Australia in the South Pacific Ocean. It comprises nine islands (four reef islands and five coral atolls). Tuvalu’s population is approximately 11,000, with about half living on the atoll of Funafuti, which is the capital. Australia is helping Tuvalu to build a skilled workforce by providing scholarships to students to further their education. Tuvalu is an eligible country under the Seasonal Workers Program supporting temporary work visas for residents from Tuvalu in the Northern Territory. Additionally, the Northern Territory’s Birth, Deaths and Marriages will soon be entering a twinning program with Tuvalu to assist with a capacity building program. The program proposes looking at Tuvalu’s general registration practices and information sharing on how it might better engage with remote communities located in the outer islands of Tuvalu.
