Timor-Leste, or East Timor, officially the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste and the Northern Territory have a long-standing and close relationship, with the Territory representing more than 30% of total Australian trade with Timor-Leste. The City of Darwin has had an active sister city relationship with Dili since 2003. This is bolstered by strong sporting and cultural links between the Northern Territory and Timor-Leste, with the Northern Territory Government consistently supporting mutually beneficial Timorese sporting initiatives. Australia works with the Government and people of Timor-Leste to support their priorities and their programs. We assist in three strategic areas – economy, people and society. Across all programs, we prioritise improving nutrition, empowering women and girls and supporting disability-inclusive development.
